STANDARD MOULDINGS - GENERAL REQUIREMENTS HWM 2-91
All hardwood interior trim and moulding sold as conforming to this standard shall be clear-face trim, except where characteristics of the wood and seasoning defects as hereinafter specified, may be present in not to exceed 5% of any pattern. It shall be well manufactured in accordance with the following requirements.
SEASONING:
Material shall be properly kiln dried according to accepted methods for the species in question to a moisture content of 5% to 9% when shipped from the mill.
WORKMANSHIP:
All woodwork shall be well manufactured and shall conform to the various grades hereinafter defined.
GRADING:

ALLOWABLE CHARACTERISTICS:
Those characteristics on the reverse side that do not impair its use shall be allowed.
GRADE:
Wood mouldings are available in two grades. "N GRADE" is intended for natural or clear finishes and the exposed face must be of one single piece. "P Grade" is intended for opaque paint finishes or overlays and can be finger jointed and/or edge glued.
DETAIL REQUIREMENTS - GRADE "N":
The characteristics and seasoning defects allowed in any one piece shall be only as covered by not more than any two of the following paragraphs.
Characteristics:
Sapwood. Sapwood shall be allowed in all items of hardwood interior trim and moulding, except when requested and at additional costs.
Stain. Stain covering not more than 25% in any one piece (surface measure), and not more than 5% of the quantity of any one item, shall be allowed.
Streaks. Slight streaks shall be permitted in not more than 10% of the quantity of any one item.
Worm holes. Worm holes not larger than 1/16" in diameter and not more than one to each 3 linear feet shall be allowed. Maximum quantity of material containing worm holes shall not exceed 5% of the quantity of any one item.
Knots. One knot, tight, sound and smoothly dressed, not to exceed 1/2" diameter per piece, shall be allowed. Maximum quantity of material containing knots shall not exceed 5% of the quantity of any one item. Burls that do not contain knots over 1/8 inch in diameter or unsound centers shall not be considered a defect.
Machine imperfections. Slight machine imperfections which can be eliminated by hand-sanding shall be allowed.
Torn grain A maximum depth of 1/32" will be permitted on machine-run stock in not over 10% of the length in any one piece and not more than 5% of the quantity of any one item.
SEASONING DEFECTS
End splits. End splits 1/8" in length for each linear foot, or its equivalent, per piece will be allowed, except that where exact lengths are specified, stock shall be usable for the purpose intended, without waste.
Surface checks. Surface checks not to exceed 1/32" wide, 1" long, and one check to each foot (surface measure), or its equivalent, per piece, shall be allowed. Maximum quantity of material containing surface checks shall not exceed 5% of the quantity of any one item.
Warp. Warped stock that will lie flat or straight with ordinary nailing shall be allowed.
DETAIL REQUIREMENTS - GRADE "P":
This grade shall be the same as Grade "N" except that when sold and marked "Grade P," there shall be no restriction as to sapwood and stain in any of the species, as this grade is normally confined to a paint finish.
LENGTHS:
Random lengths shall be 3 to 16 feet on 6 inch or one foot increments. Not over 20% of any one item shall be under 6 feet. When computing the percentage of shorts in casing and stops, pieces 7 feet in length will be considered long lengths.
Specified lengths of cut to length window and door trim shall be graded as completely usable.
Jambs, casings and stop sides may be shipped with up to 33% heads developing. Laminated and/or finger jointed mouldings may be ordered in specified lengths with not over 15% trim backs permitted in any one item.
ADHESIVES:
Adhesives used in finger joints or laminations shall meet the dry use adhesive performance requirements of ASTM D-3110-88 (or latest revision) "Standard Specification for Adhesives Use in Non-Structural Glued Lumber Products."
In situations where a Wet-Use adhesive is required, it shall be so specified, acknowledged and invoiced.
MANUFACTURING TOLERANCES:
Thickness and width + or - 1/32".
REINSPECTION:
All hardwood interior trim and moulding sold as conforming to this standard is subject to reinspection in the condition as received. Request for reinspection must be made within ten (10) days of receipt of the shipment conplained or, 72 hours if claim is for excess moisture content.
DEFINITIONS:
Definitions of characteristics permitted in wood moulding:
End split. Lengthwise separation of wood extending from one surface through the peice to the opposite or an adjoining surface. A separation of the wood due to the tearing apart of the wood cells.
Light skip. Areas on a piece that failed to surface clean. Not over 1/32" deep.
Light snipe. A depression at the end of a piece of moulding caused by the bars not holding the raw material squarely in place.
Mineral stain. Discoloration on or in lumber other than its natural color.
Season check. A lengthwise separation of the wood that usually extends across the annual growth rings and commonly results from stresses set up in wood during seasoning.
Torn grain. Part of the wood torn out in dressing or surfacing where the tearing is deep enough to warrant measurement. Light torn grain - not over 1/32" deep; medium torn grain - over 1/32" but not over 1/16" deep; heavy torn grain - over 1/16" deep but not over 1/8" deep; deep torn grain over 1/8" deep.
SETTLEMENT PROVISIONS:
In determining compliance with purchase specifications and of effecting settlement of invoices between buyers and sellers, each item of a shipment shall be considered as of the grade invoiced if upon reinspection 95% thereof or more is found to be of said grade or better.
OVER AND UNDER SHIPMENTS:
Standard patterns + or - 10%.
NON-STANDARD ITEMS:
May have up to 20% over or under with cutbacks.
